Slums
Khlong Toei, known for being one of Bangkok’s largest slums it is also home of a major market, though not one that is very popular with the community and tourists for safety and quality. Khlong takes up 2 square miles and is inhabited by 100,000 migrants. It has a high number of gangs and violence is a constant. Through the center of the slum run the polluted waters of the Klong Toey, the water: undrinkable. Across from this runs a train in which goods heading to the city pass through. Family’s houses are made up of all they can get but it is their home and all they have along with it.

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific has released the statistics that Bangkok has over 6.8 million registered cars, this is a massive growth from 1980 when only a mere 600,000 sped along the freeways of the mega city. What’s more is that research shows that the number of cars in the city continues to grow over 6% each year. Due to this giant number of cars asthma is now a major problem in Bangkok, as know 15 to 20 % of the population now are prone to suffer it due to the major levels of pollution. Chemicals like benzene from car exhaust also a cause of heart disease and cancer.
