A sustainable city, or eco-city, is a
city designed to reduce its environmental impact.
Air pollution
Industrial growth, vehicles and factories have created high levels of air pollution in Thailand, especially in Bangkok. Seven million people died as a result of air pollution in 2012 (world wide). Air pollution is a major problem in Bangkok. Over the past few years, Bangkok has started cleaning up its act of air pollution. The government cutting motorcycle emissions and adding an overhead subways helped to cut down on the pollution. Thailand has some of the highest cancer rates in the world, caused by people spending to much time in pollution-choked streets.
Water resources
Due to rapid economic development in the past few years, water demand continues to grow. Many people have to drink untreated domestic sewage, industrial waste water and solid hazardous wastes. One third of the surface water is of poor quality in Thailand. In developing countries, more then 80% of illnesses and sickness are related to poor water and sanitation conditions. Thailand's surface water, ground water and sea water are being improved so they are safe and clean.
Health effects
As many people do not have the money or opportunity to have health vaccinations in Bangkok/Thailand, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, measles and tetanus-diphtheria are very common throughout poorer communities. Cancer is also a big problem, caused by heavy pollution. AIDS/HIV is very common in Thailand with 1,115,415 adults being effected with it in 2008. Areas are providing more health care centers for people who are poor.
Climate change
Bangkok is really doing nothing to address climate change. Bangkok's ground continues to sink 3 centimeters a year, due to climate change, but Thailand's goverment contunies to do nothing about it. The cities planners are still building heavy sky scrapers that are heavy which is making the ground sink faster.
How could these problems be improved?
The Bangkok government could have rental bikes so people could ride to work. This would stop traffic and pollution. They could provide cleaner water for poorer people. The government could offer affordable housing for poorer people. Cleaning up slum areas would improve the health issues and sanitary issues. They could improve recycling and turn old things like plastic into something new.
